FAQs

The questions we hear most — answered honestly.

  • If you own a condominium balcony or terrace in Toronto, the GTA, or Vancouver — and you’ve been meaning to do something with it for longer than you’d like to admit — there’s a good chance we’re exactly right for you.

We work with people who want their outdoor space to be genuinely beautiful, who value quality and expertise over the cheapest option, and who would rather hand the whole thing to professionals than figure it out themselves. We don’t do quick fixes or DIY support — but if you want a space you’ll be proud of for years, that’s precisely what we’re built for.

  • Not at all — in fact, not knowing exactly what you want is probably the most common place our clients start. Some come to us with a clear vision. Most come with a feeling: that their balcony is wasted, or uninspiring, or just not what it could be.

Part of what we do is help you figure out what you actually want — your design style, how you’ll use the space, what’s realistic for your building and your budget. You don’t need to arrive with answers. Just curiosity.

  • We do offer you a complimentary Discovery call, to ask your top questions. But then, yes, we do charge to look at your specific project.

The difference between us and other companies matters. Other companies offer free estimates because they’re selling a product: cookie-cutter design; a set menu of materials; a basic installation; for a simple, unsophisticated job they’ve done a hundred times before. What they give you for free reflects exactly how much thought goes into it.

Garden Connections doesn’t work that way. We are designers and master landscape architects. Before we recommend anything, we need to understand your vision, your lifestyle, your space and your building’s rules — properly. That takes expertise and time, and we respect both enough to charge for them. What you get in return is a comprehensive assessment you can actually trust, from people who have done the work to earn that trust.

Think of it the way you’d think of a physician or an architect. You wouldn’t expect a diagnosis for free. You’d expect to pay for someone who gets it right.

And frankly, our Phase One assessment is a low-cost commitment for you, because you can stop there, or go forward with confidence that you have the information you need in hand.

  • Honestly? It depends — and we’d be doing you a disservice to give you a number without knowing your space. The size of your balcony or terrace, the design direction, the materials, what your building requires for approval — all of it shapes the investment.

What we can tell you is that clients who work with Garden Connections consistently tell us the result was worth it. Not just aesthetically — but because a well-designed, properly installed outdoor space doesn’t need to be redone every few years. Done right the first time, it lasts. And delivers pleasure day after day, day and night, summer and winter.

We also work with phased approaches for clients who want to spread the investment over time. The right place to start is a conversation.

  • Almost certainly — yes. We hear this concern often, and that’s why we start building a relationship with your Property Manager from Day 1 - so we’ll find out very quickly if there are likely to be problems.

In our experience, “strict board” rarely means “impossible.” It usually means the approval process needs to be handled properly, with the right documentation, the right drawings, and the right approach. That is something we do every day.

Garden Connections prepares everything your board needs: approval-ready design documentation, technical drawings, engineering coordination where required. We know what condo boards in Toronto and Vancouver are looking for, and we know how to present a project in a way that gets approved.

The buildings our clients have worried most about have often been the most straightforward approvals. Because we know what we’re doing.

  • We handle it. Fully. This is one of the things that sets Garden Connections apart — we don’t hand you a design and leave you to navigate your building’s rules on your own.

We prepare all the documentation your board requires, coordinate any structural engineering review for larger terrace projects, and work directly with your property manager where needed. You’ll need to provide some information and sign the application, but that’s it. You’ll know what’s happening at every step, but the heavy lifting is ours.

  • We understand the urge to want it done now — especially once you’ve decided you’re ready. The honest answer is that a well-done transformation takes time: design, approvals, sourcing the right materials and installers, fabrication, installation. For most projects, that’s several months from start to finish.

What we’d say is this: the clients who rush the process are the ones who end up disappointed. The clients who trust it are the ones who step onto their finished terrace and can’t imagine having done it any other way. If timing is a real constraint, the best thing to do is reach out now — the sooner we start, the sooner you’re done.

Autumn and winter are actually ideal for design and planning, with installation timed perfectly for spring and summer.

  • We can’t — and it’s worth explaining why.

Garden Connections works end-to-end because that’s the only way we can stand behind the result. A design is only as good as its execution, and we’ve seen too many beautiful plans fall apart in the hands of the wrong installer. Someone who takes short-cuts, using poor quality materials, or ignores the drawings.

Our value isn’t just in the design. It’s in knowing which installers to trust, how to manage the process, and how to make sure what you imagined is what you actually get. Separating those things wouldn’t serve you well — and we’d rather be honest about that than take a partial brief we can’t be proud of.

That said, we can prepare a plan to phase your project, so you the procurement, fabrication and installation can be accomplished over a 2 to 3-year period, to work within your budget constraints.

  • That’s a fair question — and a smart one to ask before investing in your home. The best answer we can give is to show you the work. Our portfolio spans years of completed projects across Toronto and Vancouver, each one different, each one the result of a client who trusted us and ended up with a space they love.

We’ve also been featured in design and lifestyle media, which is worth a look if you want an outside perspective on what we do and how we do it. And when you’re ready, a Discovery Call costs you nothing but 30 minutes — and you’ll know within that conversation whether we’re the right fit.
